Extractions and Socket Graft
The quality and quantity of bone is crucial when dental implants are planned. When placing implants there must be good quality bone completely surrounding the implant. After a tooth is extracted the socket or hole the remains must heal and fill in with bone. This is a natural healing process that will occur in most every instance without any intervention. However, there are some situations that hinder the healing process and incomplete healing occurs leaving behind thin bone. In these instances placement of dental implants is more difficult, has a poorer prognosis and sometimes dental implant placement is not possible. Socket preservation grafts prevent this poor healing process with a very high success rate. The advantages far out weigh the disadvantages when even a small chance of poor bone healing is possible. The advantages are, lower cost than a bone graft to fix a defect, the procedure is done at the time of the extraction so no additional surgery is needed, and the time saved if an additional graft is needed is great (one can save at least 6 months). Socket preservation grafts are not always needed. Dr. Mullendore and Dr. Von Kaenel will evaluate each individual patient for bone present before the extraction, location of the extraction and planned restoration before discussing the benefits of a socket preservation if it is recommended.
