WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox (and other brands of botulinum toxin a) is a naturally made molecule (or medication) that is used to temporarily paralyze muscles. This in turn diminishes the look of wrinkles and lines on your face. Most often patients get Botox for problem areas like the forehead, lateral eye lids, and brow. Botox can also help with migraines. In one twelve-month study, Botox injected into various spots on the head and neck resulted in 70% of enrolled patients having greater than a 50% reduction in number of headaches.
Botox injections have also been shown to slim the appearance of a “square face” by decreasing the size of the masseter muscles on the sides of the face. This can actually give the face a narrow appearance. This has been found to be particularly true and effective for people who clench and grind their teeth.
WHAT AREAS ARE TREATED?
Brow, Forehead, Eyes, Lips all may benefit from the effects of Botox depending on the individual needs and/or concerns.
IS BOTOX SAFE?
Yes! Botox is one of the safest cosmetic treatments available. Long-term research studies with Botox over 9 years and 853 treatment sessions resulted in side effects for less than 1% of patients. So over 99% had no side effects. The side effects reported were all temporary and considered minor. Some examples of these are headaches and bruising.
DOES BOTOX HURT?
Most people report mild pain on injection. There is no numbing medicine administered as it is not needed and would likely be more painful to do so. The needle used for Botox is much, much thinner than that used for most other injections.
CAN I GO BACK TO WORK AFTER RECEIVING BOTOX?
Many patients get Botox injections during work hours and return to work (over lunch for example). While there is a risk of bruising, very minor bleeding, and some mild swelling at the injection site all are typically not noticeable in 30 minutes or less.
WHAT ARE UNITS?
Botox comes in 50 and 100 unit vials. This is diluted so that a small number of units can be administered with a small volume of saline. Starting dosage for muscle injection for facial pain for example is 10 units per side, where as injection of the forehead, brow and lateral eyes is around 40 units total.
HOW MUCH WILL MY BOTOX TREATMENT COST?
This depends on how many areas are treated or essentially how many units are used to treat the needed areas.
